and thanks to Wolf for triggering this one.

On another note, much dismay in the Waffle household as I discover that none of the animal shelters nearby seem to have kittens.

Never in my life has this been a concern - suddenly it matters.

So, anyone reading in the general Brussels area with available kittens - please let me know.

Liked the poem, and sorry to hear about the kitten shortage in Brussels.

Any views on the next Oxford Professor of Poetry? I lean towards Walcott, but not with any great enthusiasm...

You can read all about it here:

Similarly, Carol Ann Duffy is being touted as the next Poet Laureate -- does anyone care?

I had a happy day talking and e-mailing about poetry due to a colleague breaking cover and showing me some of his work.

My poem is a distillation of one of his. Maybe we'll develop an ongoing collaboration. It would be fun.

As for kittens - I thought they grew on trees. Now I actually want one you can't find any!

Are you a Cat Person?

I'm not - which makes it all the more strange.

Tomorrow's a day off here in Belgium. Whooppee!

Cheers

I utterly detest dogs and dog owners, who carry dog shit around in little plastic bags. Cats are nicer to look at and I like the way they move. Of course, Deleuze would say that domestic animals are an abomination and that we should reserve our admiration for their wild relatives, the wolves and the big cats...

Just in: The Amazing Bud Powell Vols I & II. Wow. I can see why Miles called him "one of the greatest piano players in this century". Vol I is hard bebop, which I enjoyed less, but Vol II is highly recommended: the range of tone, the complexity . . .

I'm enjoying Miles's autobiography, but we've only just got on to Birth of the Cool -- a long journey ahead, and like the saddo I am I plan to listen to each album as it comes up . . .

I take it from your silence about Laureates and Professors of Poetry that no, nobody cares! Quite so.

Sorry about the Poet Laureate omission - I suppose the Welsh chanteuse Duffy might have been a more inspiring choice than Carol Ann ... . I wasn't a big fan of Motion & it didn't do much for Ted Hughes by all accounts. I prefer my poets as down-at-heel marginal types - not really what goes with Laureateship.

Agree utterly on the dog front - largely due to being terrorized as an infant by my cousin's beagle. Deleuze - as I recall in an interview - went on about the Oedipalism of dog ownership. Perhaps cats have a get out clause (awful pun, of course) being more aloof.

Envy your Miles immersion & Bud Powell is someone I ought to know better. As you'll have gathered I'm delving into the joys (or otherwise) of Joy Division (Graham Foust's poems seem to inhabit a similar space - so I thought I'd check them out. Gizzi seems to be more a Talking Heads & Eno man).

Another dose of Reggie Perrin tonight!

Cheers

PS Allow me to revise my estimate of Bud Powell Vol I -- there are some outstanding tracks on it, just for the record!

PPS Glad you agree about dogs -- it's rare to find anyone who does!

not utterly sure I like cats either - but I'm prepared to give it a go.

Could do with a Totem Animal!
